Obituary for Albert Dudding Sr.

Albert Eugene “Gene” Dudding, Sr., 91, of Cloverdale, Virginia went to be with the Lord on the night of Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Hulda Dudding; his brothers, Walter “Buddie” and Roy Dudding; sisters, Margaret “Jane” Humphrey and Juanita “Hattie” Saunders; and a daughter, Brenda Gale Mitchell.

Gene grew up in Cloverdale. He stoked the fires as a kid for his school, worked in the peach orchards and eventually went to work on the docks at General Motor Lines in Roanoke where he learned to drive a truck.

He joined the military in 1951 where he served as a cook in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed at McChord AFB, Tacoma, Washington, he met Veda Hosler, married her and brought her back to Cloverdale. After an honorable discharge in January of 1955, he went back to work at General Motor Lines where everybody called him “8-Ball”. Gene and Veda lived in Craig County for a time and then in Roanoke where Gene eventually drove for Smith Transfer before retiring.

A member of Fairview United Methodist Church for many years, Gene served as a sexton and was a member of the choir. He loved the church and the people in it, often reminiscing about friends, apple butter making and helping with the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Trying his hand at woodworking, he found joy creating things in his shop for family and friends. He enjoyed living in Cloverdale where he was born, enjoyed having a garden for many years but, most of all he loved his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Veda; his son, Albert “Sput” Dudding, Jr.; daughters, Janet Kaplan, Connie Custer, and Lucinda “Cindy” Casavant (Dennis); six grandchildren, Safia and Eddie Kaplan, Mallory Eldridge (Thomas), Kacey Giles, Matthew Dudding (Jessica), and Faith Osborne (Trevor); and five great- grandchildren, Taryn Giles, Daniel Osborne, June Dudding, and Jack and Sam Eldridge. Also left to grieve his loss is son-in-law, David Mitchell and many special nieces and nephews.

A graveside service honoring Gene’s legacy will be held in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tim Gearheart officiating.
