Obituary for Aliceon Clark Akers

Aliceon Clark Akers, 85, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully in her home, Sunday, September 11, 2022. Born June 9, 1937 in Richmond, Aliceon grew up in Byllesby and Pulaski and was a graduate of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida where she was a member of ADPi sorority. She taught at Clearbrook Elementary School in Roanoke before becoming a committed homemaker and what would later be known as a “soccer mom.” In addition to being dedicated to her family, Aliceon was a multi-talented woman with a keen eye for interior design, a skill she used to help design her family home. Gifted with a needle and thread, she designed and crafted countless articles of clothing and home décor pieces. She took great pleasure in guiding and raising her children, gardening and maintaining her yard, and taking care of her beloved cats. Aliceon was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Roanoke Valley and served in many volunteer roles, including organizing the popular Sidewalk Art Show in Downtown Roanoke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace Chase Clark and Aliceon Davison Clark, a son, Matthew Clark Gardner, and former husband, John Everette Gardner, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, James Kelly Akers; her children, Aliceon Gardner Anderson and her husband, Vernon Trippe Anderson, III of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mary Margaret Gardner Thomas and her husband, William Edwin Thomas, Jr. of Miami Beach, Florida, John Everette Gardner, III of Roanoke; and grandchildren, John Everette Gardner, IV of Arlington, Mary Grace Abele Thomas, Gardner Stone Thomas and Marguerite Gibson Thomas of Miami Beach, Florida.
