Ann
Silvers
(Umberger)
Ann Jeffries Umberger Silvers, 80, passed on peacefully at her long-time residence in Vinton, Virginia, on Thursday, October 6, 2022, with her loving family by her side.
Ann was born on November 29, 1941, in Charleston, W.Va., to her parents, Harry and June Umberger, and spent the majority of her youth growing up in Wytheville, Va. She was a graduate of George Wythe High School and attended Emory & Henry College.
Ann began her working career with the Virginia State Police. She later worked for, and retired from, Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In between, she served her community in a variety of roles – among them, she volunteered at local hospitals and her children’s elementary schools, worked as a substitute teacher, served as a Girl Scout leader and taught arts and crafts.
On June 16, 1962, Ann married her life-long love, James A. “Sonny” Silvers, and the couple remained inseparable for the next 48 years until his passing in 2011. More than anything, Ann loved her family and spending time with them. Additionally, she loved the beach, boating, and the outdoors and, most recently, spent her summers camping at Smith Mountain Lake. She was also an avid Virginia Tech sports fan, attending football games with Sonny, their friends and family for many years.
Ann is survived by her three children, Karen Silvers Neel and her husband, Darin Neel, of Goodview, Amy Silvers Skaff and her husband, Dinny Skaff, of Roanoke, and Andy Silvers of Vinton; her grandchildren, all of which she considered her “pride and joy,” Logan, Kasey, and Sam Skaff of Roanoke; her best friend and sister, Tess Umberger and her husband, Buddy Umberger, of Lynchburg; her brother, Gary Umberger and his wife, Diane Umberger, of Wytheville; her sister-in-law, Nancy Curtis of Christiansburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Timothy Pratt officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at the funeral home.
