Obituary for Barbara Baker

Barbara Buck Baker of Roanoke, VA, passed away peacefully at home November 8, 2023. She was born January 31, 1945, to the late Charles Edward Buck and Sara “Madge” Buck. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 40 years, James Walter (J.W.) Baker, Jr.

Barbara was a graduate of Patrick Henry High School in 1963 and was a former member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Barbara lived a full life as a wonderful loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. She especially enjoyed her role as Nana or “Baba”.

She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She made friends everywhere she went with her infectious laugh and witty sense of humor. In her spare time, you would most likely find her at T.J. Maxx, her favorite place to find treasures for the entire family. She was more than happy to be the central figure in the lives of her children. Anyone who knew them, knew that she was a star in their eyes and that’s all that ever mattered to her.

Those who will continue to celebrate her life and cherish her memory are her children, Catherine (Cathie) Baker Flora (Nick Beasley) and James (Jay) Walter Baker III and wife Sarah Baker all of Roanoke, Va.; son-in-law, Cecil (AL) Alfred Flora Jr. of Boones Mill, Va.; grandchildren, Sara Margaret Flora (Aaron Wimmer), Carson and Thomas Baker; sister-in-law, Fran Baker Morgan of Roanoke, Va.; companion, Butch Maher and her fur baby feline companion for 12 years, “Miss Bella”.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, Tina Hight and Brenda Leher for their dedicated love and compassion toward mom as well as  Brenda Urgo and Good Samaritan Hospice.

Family will lovingly greet family and friends on Friday night, November 17, 2023 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Oakey’s South Chapel. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to Roanoke Valley SPCA.
