Obituary for Barbara McLelland (Scholz)

Barbara Scholz McLelland, “Punch”, of Roanoke, VA, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022. Born June 12, 1930 in Radford, VA, to the late Herbert and Virginia May Scholz, Barbara was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She was active with the Women’s Circle and Alter Guild, and was chosen Roanoke Valley Mother of The Year 1977 for Religious Activities. Outside of her church, she was active with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Roanoke Valley Christian Women’s Club, Docents, and PTO, Roanoke Valley Swimming, and served as an Election Poll worker for numerous elections. Barbara loved her annual family vacation to Holden Beach where she developed her passion for sea turtles. She enjoyed watching countless church activities, school and sporting events for her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Roanoke as well as Maryland and Ohio. In addition to her annual beach trip, she looked forward every year to her trip to Augusta National Golf Course and the Master’s Tournament, where she was affectionally known as the “Queen of the 14th hole”. Barbara was well known for her pink elephant collection and her love of chocolate. It was known by many that she hid her candy from family and friends. Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert “Bob” McLelland, and granddaughter Elizabeth Nichols. She is survived by daughters Rebecca Whisnant, Virginia McLelland, Susan Ware (Stephan), and Robin Nichols (Dan). She is also survived by grandchildren Shane Whisnant (Amanda), Sara Paige Whisnant (Tommy), Travis Whisnant (Paige), Steele Whisnant (Jill), Ashlee Spangler (Matt), Josh Headen (Laura), Barbara Joy Headen, Christian Headen, Caitlin Donlan (Tommy), Colin Ware (Holly), Brooke McKinley, Hunter Nichols (Jess), Jamie Nichols; great grandchildren Scarlet, Vann, Jaeda, Berkeley, Adelyn, Emerson, Olivia, Bryson, Natalee, Briar, Tripp, Kane, Rosemary, Everett, Lucy, Charlotte and Lennon; and great great granddaughter Emilee. Additionally, she is survived by brothers Herbert “Sonny” Scholz (Charlotte) and Robert Scholz (Adriana), a sister-in-law, Jo Ann McLelland and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family wants to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Friendship Retirement Community, especially the 4th floor nursing staff of the Memory Care unit. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday, August 12, at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, August 13, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
