Obituary for Barbara Spray (Yeager)

Barbara Frances Spray (May 18, 1935 – October 31, 2023).  Barbara was born in Tinnie, New Mexico, to Fay A. Sirman Yeager and William V. Yeager formerly of McAlister and Coalgate, Oklahoma.

Her first encounter with our Lord Jesus was in Crystal City, Texas when she joined a group of neighborhood children who were riding a bus to attend a Bible Study at a Nazarene church.  She spoke with the Pastor wanting to be baptized, but before that was arranged, her family moved to a different area.

The family lived in New Mexico and Texas for a number of years before finally settling in Mangum, Oklahoma. She loved her teachers, basketball, and tennis better than algebra.  A neighbor lady and good friend Mrs. Ann Pigg took her to the Presbyterian church in Mangum every time the doors were open and she learned more about our Lord.  She studied photography and Journalism in Distributive Education classes and worked at Fike’s studio after school and for many years thereafter until she joined The Mangum Star Newspaper as Society Editor.

Barbara married Wayne Martin in 1955 and the family became members of First Baptist Church.  In 1957 she accepted Christ during a revival service led by Rev. James Robison and was baptized there.  Her first daughter, Brenda Kay was stillborn.  Her daughter, Patricia was born in 1959 and her son Larry Wayne was born in 1962. Shortly afterward the family moved to Lawton where Wayne worked as an electrician, and Barbara worked at home as a photo colorist for Hankins studio. Patricia and Larry began their schooling at Pecan Grove Elementary and completed their education at Eisenhower High School.

In 1981 Barbara moved to Oklahoma City where she was employed by the State of Oklahoma Land Commission as a certified procurement officer.  She retired after 20 years.  She married John Spray on May 23, 2002.  They attended Cameron Baptist Church. For years Barbara served alongside her husband John in the Prison Ministry at Lawton Correctional Facility in Oklahoma. They lived in Lawton until moving to Virginia in 2018 to be under the care of John’s son Michael, and his wife Linda Lea. Michael and Linda Lea cared for Barbara in their home until she passed away.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Fay A. Sirman Yeager and William V. Yeager, her son Larry Martin, and her brother Eugene Yeager. She is survived by her husband John Spray, daughter Patricia Martin, grandsons Creighton Piper and Ryan Piper and his wife Megan, her niece Cindy & Larry Magda and their son Levi, her nephew Wesley Vernon Yeager and his wife Stacey and their two daughters: Sarah and Katie; step-children Charletta and Bob Jokinen, Jonda Delozier, Becky and Dan Frank, Raymond and Paige Spray, Mike and Linda Lea Spray as well as a host of extended family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on November 7,2023 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Pastor Greg Moser officiating. All other services are private.
