Obituary for Betty Metz

Betty Jean Davis Metz, 90, of Roanoke, Virginia, transitioned to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, after a long and brave battle with breast cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Dollie Davis, and husband of 54 years, George “Allen” Metz.

Betty was born in Union, W.Va. and at age nine, they moved to Roanoke, where she later graduated as valedictorian from William Fleming High School. She met the love of her life, Allen, on a blind date when she was 16. Betty was a lifelong member of the Hollins Road Church of the Brethren and faithfully served the church in many capacities.

Betty held various secretarial and stenographer jobs throughout her life and retired from Norfolk and Southern Railway after 24 years of service. She enjoyed exploring mountains and beaches with her family in their camper and also traveled the world on trips that included Western Europe, Egypt, the Holy Land, Australia, and New Zealand. She and Allen explored many areas of the United States on numerous bus trips, organized and led by Allen, including Canada and Alaska.

Betty was an avid flower and vegetable gardener using skills learned from her father, a passion that has been passed to her children and grandchildren. She continued to enjoy spending time in her garden until a few months ago.

Betty is survived by her son, Michael; daughter, Cindy and husband, Tom Deane; daughter-in-law, Claire; granddaughter, Lauren Metz; grandson, Jeffery Metz and wife, Sarah; and great-granddaughter, Marley Jean.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank her faithful friend, Mark Burke, for all of his help in her later years, At Home Care Givers, and Good Samaritan Hospice.

Betty’s strong Christian faith called her to help others. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her memory with a donation to Good Samaritan Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, a local food bank or a charity focused on helping those in need.
