Obituary

Burchill Thomas Sweeney, Jr., 70, of Roanoke, Va. passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 26, 2020 following a brief battle with illness.

Burch was born January 14, 1950 in Elizabeth City, N.J., the only child of Helen and Burchill Thomas Sweeney, Sr. Burch was raised in Pikesville, Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland before settling in Roanoke in 1974.

Burch had a long and fulfilling career in group hotel sales and meeting planning. When he was not working, you could find him playing golf, washing cars, typing an itinerary for a family trip, or assigning a friend a nickname.

Burch will be remembered for his kindness, his positive attitude, his penchant for hospitality and having fun, and Slim Jims. He is preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Nell Murphy, uncle Bronis Kontrim, and nephew John Picard. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Hilarie Muller Sweeney of Roanoke, Va., two daughters Jessica and Matt McLees of Greenville, SC and Rebecca and Alan Miller of Roanoke, Va., and favorite knucklehead grandsons Michael Thomas and Samuel Axman McLees of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by countless friends, colleagues, golf buddies, thieves, clowns, and jugglers.

Given the current state of the world, funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Don Holliday Memorial Golf Tournament (www.donholliday.com), a local charity event with which Burch volunteered since its inception in 1986. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

Burt,
You always had a smile on your face. When you & I organized the
"Family Memorial Day Celebration" back in the 70's & 80's, it became
the best way for Old Musician Friends to get together and Party.
From a BBQ at a members house, to Crabs & Beer in the evening at the Millrace,
you were there leading the way in our depravity.
You never made fun that I, as a Marylander, was not a crab & beer guy, but rather
a Tuna Sub & Pepsi Guy. You said it was a tradition that I would beat my Tuna Sub
with a Crab mallet before I ate it, just to join in.
I'll always remember when I first met You, Carroll, Frank, Chip & Mike, The Malibu's,
at Campfield Teen Center back in the 60's. You were the producer then as you were
today.
We didn't see a lot of each other in our senior years, but when we did speak or meet
you always did as a close friend, as if we were never apart.

You will be missed Burchill

Burch was "The Commish" and will be missed by all who knew him. He made everyone feel good about themselves and all the friends around him. A friend, a wonderful husband, a great father and grandfather - the world is a bit dimmer since he has left us. However, he is lighting Heaven and will be playing some great golf courses along side of friends who have gone before him.

There are no words to express the loss of Burch - he was one of a kind and will be so missed. He always made us laugh and he took care of everybody. Hilarie and Burch are the type of friends that anyone would be lucky to have. We knew we could count on both of them for anything. So many of our friends and family were touched by Burch as well and we are all sadden by his passing. He will be remembered for so many things - it's hard to pinpoint any one thing. There will always be a part of our hearts that are lost, but a big part of our hearts that will always love and care for him. So grateful to have know Burch - he
made our lives richer and fuller with his friendship. Yvonne and David
