Obituary for Carolyn Cleveland Breeman

Carolyn Cleveland Breeman, 83, of Roanoke, Virginia passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at her home.



Born in Fort Worth, Texas on July 10, 1939, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Carolyn graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. A dedicated educator, she spent the early part of her career teaching kindergarten and elementary school in Phoenix and West Point, Virginia. In 1967 she initiated the first kindergarten program for King William County, Virginia. Later in her career, she developed and taught an adult education and reading curriculum in Selma, Alabama and taught General Education Development (GED) students through Edmundite Missions.



A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, making Mexican food, and indulging her love of painting and art.



She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leonard Glaser Breeman, her daughter Amy Cleveland Breeman-Rhodes (The Rev. Matthew Wayne Rhodes) of Lynchburg, two grandchildren, Mary Breeman Rhodes and Ella Grant Rhodes, sister Mona Linda Cleveland Thompson (Dennis Thompson) of Phoenix, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Zula Alene Ferguson Cleveland and Olan Moody Cleveland, and her brothers Thomas Moody Cleveland and Jack Wiley Cleveland.



A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Vinton Chapel of Oakey’s Funeral Home with The Rev. Marisa Sifontes of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donating to Edmundite Missions (https://www.edmunditemissions.org), the American Heart Association (www.heart.org), or the educational fund of your choice.
