Obituary for Cecil Hughes Doss
Cecil Hughes Doss, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Doss; parents, Ollie and Mary Doss; sisters, Nettie Hogan and Grace (Tootsie) Myers; brothers, Melvin, William (Bill), Calvin (Bob), Roy, Curtis, and Herman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Patricia ‘Patsy’ Doss; brother, Daniel Doss (Nancy); sister-in-law Betty Doss; son, Tim Doss (Dana); daughters, Priscilla Newton Mercer (Tom); Karen Mutter; Melissa Miller (Eric); 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Cecil served in the U.S. Navy and Korean War. He retired in 1991 from Norfolk Southern Railroad after 35 years. He was a member for 53 years with the American Legion Post #3 and Post Commander (3) terms. He was inducted into the Salem/Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame (2015). Cecil coached many Sandlot football teams, baseball teams, and was a referee for high school basketball. He was a member of Garden City Baptist Church and was active at Brookhill Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 2, 2022, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Garden City Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022, at Garden City Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park.
