Charles Newton “Bob” Flora Jr.
April 21, 1934 – April 28, 2023
Charles N. “Bob” Flora, 89, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 28, 2023.
Bob was born and grew up in Boones Mill, Va., graduated from Boones Mill High School, and served three years in the United States Army as a radio maintenance and operations specialist. While serving in Turkey, Bob returned home to marry his lovely bride, Inez Harper. Following his term in the Army, he and Inez settled in Roanoke, Va. Where Bob lived the rest of his life. Bob worked 35 years as a manufacturing engineer with ITT Electrical Optical on their night vision goggles project.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Newton and Margie Naff Flora. He was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Ruth Elene Sink (Curtis, George Alvin Flora (Eloise and Marie), Lloyd D. Flora (Reba and Polly), B. Bennie Flora (Ruth), and Marlyn Sink (Pat); and brother-in-law, Thomas A. Harper.
In addition to his wife, Inez, Bob is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Kersey Harper, Ronnie Harper, Gerald and Sylvia St.Clair, Larry and Dale Harper, Jim and Lena Farley, the Rev. Terry and Cheryl Harper, Vickie Milliken, and the Rev. Mark and Renae Harper.
After Bob and Inez retired, they were free to pursue their passions and hobbies. These included much travel to places like Kenya, Africa, and several European countries, as well as many places in the US. Bob also has a passion for golf. He not only played regularly, but attended over twenty Masters Tournaments. He was proud of the wall hanging displaying all the Masters tokens he had accumulated over the years. Bob’s other passion was growing Bonsai trees. He was a longtime member of the Hinoki Bonsai Club, including a stint as president. Bob and Inez traveled to many Bonsai Expos.
A special thanks goes out to caregiver, Dottie Roberson, who has provided excellent and compassionate care to both Bob and Inez in the past year and a half.
The Funeral Service for Bob will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at Oakey’s North Chapel with the Rev. Troy Mueller performing the service. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
