Obituary for Charles Legg

Charles Lawrence Legg, 95, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022.

He was born in Hollins, Va., and lived the rest of his life in Roanoke. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Margrete Legg, and his in-laws, John F. and Alicia Nash, and Henry Gliexner.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Gliexner; his wife of 67 years, Martha Nash Legg; two children, Lawrence Legg (Denise) and Mary Lou Legg (Drew Miller); and two grandchildren, Garrett and Kathleen Legg, all of Roanoke. He also leaves nieces and nephews.

Charlie graduated from William Fleming High School and then went on to finish in the Class of 1948 at Virginia Tech. He was a member of the Hokie Club and Legacy Club. When he retired from beekeeping, he was pleased to donate his hives to help develop an apiary for the students at Tech He owned a successful manufacturer’s representative agency. Following retirement from this business, he operated Legg Plastic Products, Inc. located in Roanoke. 

Charlie was a sailor, first on the Bay and then on Smith Mountain Lake when the dam was built. He was a charter member of VISA Yacht Club and served in various offices including Commodore. He was known for a large vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with others. He was active in the Roanoke Rotary Club for 41 years with perfect attendance. He served on the board of the Manufacturer’s Representative National Association. He has been a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church for over 60 years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM, on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 Mountain Ave., SW, Roanoke, followed reception at the church.
