On July 30, 2020, David Parrish, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 66. He was a lifelong resident of Roanoke, VA growing up in the Cave Spring area.

David is survived by his sons, David (Katie) and Benjamin (Kristen); grandchildren, Oliver, Ford, Maclin, and Elsie; his sisters, Judy (Marcus) Potts, Mary Beth (Jim) Cargill, and Leigh Ann Stevens. He is predeceased by his father, David Parrish, Sr., and mother, Marlene Stump.

David graduated from Cave Spring High School, Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics, and Hollins University with a Master's of Arts in Liberal Studies. Following college, he developed a successful career as a data analyst in health care and was a devoted member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Roanoke. David was also an avid guitarist. In college, he was known to play Jimi Hendrix solos through an amp posted in his dorm room window for everyone to hear. He went on to play more subtle, live acoustic sets at local venues around Roanoke. He loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed long rides on the Blue Ridge Parkway, whether by bicycle or convertible. His love of music and the outdoors continued throughout his life and he delighted in sharing these passions with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Pappy."

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Evergreen Burial Park. The Parrish family kindly requests that friends attending the service remember to practice social distancing.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Arrangements by Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel.

I've known Dave since 1972. We were "Hokies" at Virginia Tech. When we met, we became instant friends, matter of fact, Dave was more than just a great friend, he was like a brother to me. Over the years, we would have lengthy conversations about our kids, current events, and our "old" college stories. There was nothing Dave would not do for you. I remember when he showed up at my fiftieth surprise birthday party. What a time we had. Also, when he came to my daughters wedding in April 2019. He was sick then, but had not told me yet. He just didn't want to take away from my day.
Dave will be sadly missed. I will always remember how good he sang, and how well he played the guitar. I saw Dave five days ago, before he passed away. We had a great day, and near the end of my visit we listened to songs on his phone. How he loved music. Our nicknames in college were "Nero" which was Dave's, and mine was "Bus Riley." It is a long story how we got those nicknames. I just want to say to "Nero" in heaven, that one day "Bus Riley" will see him again and we will sing those old songs. To Dave, Ben and your families, I'm so sorry for your loss. To my friend and brother, enjoy your new journey.
