Obituary for David Willis Sr.

On the evening of Tuesday, May, 17, 2016, David Denton Hull Willis, Sr. finished his fight with pancreatic cancer and soared away.  He passed on from the comfort of his home surrounded by those he loved. He will be remembered as an exceptional husband, father, brother, friend, leader, mentor, and tenacious soul who left an indelible mark on everyone he met. David was born on March 13, 1959, in Roanoke, VA. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Willis, his mother, Anne Hull Willis Taylor, and his stepfather, Thomas "Tommy" DeMoss Taylor. He was a lifelong resident of Roanoke and attended North Cross School and St. John’s Episcopal Church. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Geology, that he put to use working in the oil fields of Louisiana. He began work at the family business, Rockydale Quarries Corporation, in 1985 where he held many positions including Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President. Starting in 2006 to the present, David put his heart, strength, and talents into the successful reorganization and growth of the business. David is loved not only by his family and extended family, but also by his Rockydale family. In 2008 he assumed the role of President and Chairman of the Board for Old Heritage Corporation.  His philanthropic efforts spanned many decades and included serving on the Board of Directors for Hometown Bank, Virginia Aggregates Association, Greenvale School, North Cross School and Roanoke Valley YMCA where he served as President. He also served in a leadership capacity for the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance, Boy Scouts of America, and Roanoke Valley United Way. He was a passionate member of the Blue Ridge Soaring Society and was featured in the prestigious FAA Airman database.  He is survived by his loving wife, Cydney Critcher Willis; son and daughter-in-law, David Denton Hull Willis, Jr. and Lauren Marie Willis of Richmond, VA; son and son’s love, Marshall Thomas Critcher Willis and Kathryn Hester Tomlinson of Sperryville, VA; sons James Burns Willis of East Hampton, NY, and Keith Parker Willis and Blake Jackson Willis of Roanoke, VA. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles Keith Willis and Lori Thomas Willis; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Willis Revette and Charles Revette; sister, Mary Holman Willis; and step siblings, Sharon Taylor Crigger, Linda Taylor Ely, and James Taylor.  The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Oakey’s South Chapel.  A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016, at St. John’s Episcopal Church with a reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to your favorite charity. In addition, the family would like to thank all the nurses at RMH 10 South.
