Obituary for Delores Jones
Delores Jean Scyphers Jones of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at the age of 82.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Minor Jones; parents, Gay and Reese Scyphers; and sister, Patty Cochran of Abingdon, Va. She was also preceded in death by her stepson, Robert Minor Jones Jr.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughter, Sandra Pascasio and husband, Christian, of Glen Allen, Va.; stepsons, Richard S. Jones and wife, Elizabeth, of Roanoke, and Stephen G. Jones and wife, Susan, of Richmond; granddaughters, Heather Wilson and Charlotte Jones of Roanoke, and Jenny Bliley and husband, Carey, of Richmond; grandson, Robbie Sullivan of Richmond; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Delores is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Evans and wife Bonnie, of Marion, Va., David and wife Vickie, and Cecil and wife Madgie, all of Abingdon.
Delores was a graduate of Greendale High School and Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abingdon and was employed as a Registered Nurse for several years and in many capacities at Johnston Memorial.
She continued her training in coronary care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn., and was instrumental in beginning the coronary care unit at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She continued her career with Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem and St. Luke’s Hospital in Richmond, retiring from Lewis Gale after 20 years of service.
Delores was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24015.
The family would like to extend much appreciation to Brianna Ward for her commitment and love shown to Delores over the last seven years as her companion and caregiver; Our Lady of the Valley administration and staff for providing two years of service and care, and Good Samaritan Hospice for focused care in her final days, which also contributed to our family’s continued feelings of security for our dear mother, sister, aunt, grand and great-grandmother and friend.
We invite you to visit from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Oakey’s South Chapel with funeral services to be conducted at 11 a.m. Interment will take place directly after the service at Evergreen Burial Park. A reception will follow at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church’s Allison Fund, or to the Good Samaritan Hospice’s Center for Caring Fund.
