Obituary for Douglas Patterson

Douglas Clinton Patterson, 75, of Roanoke, VA died suddenly on Monday, January 9, 2023.

After a stroke, Doug spent his last 10 years in nursing care at Friendship Manor. We are thankful for the good care and attention he received there.

Doug will be remembered for the 75 shows in which he appeared at Mill Mountain Theatre (MMT) - leading and supporting roles - between 1977 and 2004. He began with a lead: Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, then played the much smaller part of Erronius when MMT revived the comedy in 2001.

After moving to Roanoke in the late 1970s, Doug went on to play roles in every season, including Pharaoh in Joseph and The Technicolor Dreamcoat, Clarence in A Wonderful Life, the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz, Smee in Peter Pan, the Mayor in The Music Man, Stephano in The Tempest, Max Detweiler in The Sound of Music, and one of his favorites, Tevye in Fiddler On the Roof and so many more to the delight of audiences in each.

Doug worked in administration and casting at Mill Mountain Theatre once it moved to Center In The Square. He was funny and lovable and will always be remembered fondly by the staff, directors, designers, and actors he worked with at MMT.

He is survived by Alice Burlinson and Michelle Bennett who cared for him in his last years.

Doug requested no funeral. Donations in his memory may be made to the Douglas C. Patterson Scholarship Fund at Mill Mountain Theatre, 1 Market Sq., Roanoke, VA 24011. Online condolences may be expressed at www.Oakeys.com.
