Obituary for Frank Bartley

 

Frank Onyx Bartley, age 82, of Moneta, Virginia passed away peacefully following a long, hard fight with leukemia on Saturday, March 11, 2023.  Frank was born on March 2, 1941 in Chilhowie, VA. He was the youngest son of the late Bascom Slemp Bartley and Catherine Aker Bartley.

Frank was a long time employee of General Electric in Salem, Virginia for 28 years. He was an avid fisherman of rivers & oceans and loved to hunt deer & turkey with his son, Richard.  He loved going camping with his family, pets, and long time buddies. Frank was a Mr. Fix-It to anyone who knew him and would always lend a helping hand to family, neighbors, and strangers. He served in the United States Army Military Police and received the following honors during his service- Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter: Rifle, Letter of Commandation, Driver & Mechanic Badge with Bar. He also served in the Vinton Jaycees for many years. He was a long time member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church in Vinton, Virginia where he lived with his family before moving to Smith Mountain Lake for the last 33 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joan, daughter & caretaker Lisa and her husband Steven Wade Sutherland. Two grandsons, Jacob and Matt Sutherland. His son, Richard Bartley and wife, Debbie. Grandson Braden Bartley. Brother, Melvin Bartley and wife Kathryn. Niece Sandy, as well as many devoted cousins, friends, and his devoted four legged friend Maggie.

The family wishes to offer a special thank you to Dr. William Fintel, Dr. Andrew Fintel, and the staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Center. We would also like to thank Promedica Hospice staff and the wonderful nurses for their acts of kindness and compassion. We would also like to thank the compassionate nurses in the Palliative Care Unit at Carillion for their special care. A special thank you to ALL the wonderful friends and neighbors who visited, provided meals, and walked Maggie. Your devotion and love is much appreciated by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bedford or Moneta Rescue Squads. 

The family will have A PRIVATE FAMILY MEMORIAL TO CELEBRATE FRANK’S BEAUTIFUL LIFE ON THIS EARTH.
