Gregory Lee Freeman, 82, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. Born December 21, 1940, he was a lifelong resident of the Roanoke Valley except for a tour of duty in the Army. While stationed in Germany, he met and married his wife Gudrun. Upon their return to Roanoke, he joined his father at Roanoke Stamp & Seal Company and became the driving force who grew the business into a national enterprise. Along the way he pursued interests like rally racing in his 20’s, flying his plane in his 50’s and biking throughout the valley in his 70’s, but he was always ready to lend a hand and never met a stranger. He continued to work until two months before his death.
Greg leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Gudrun; his children, Frank Freeman (Astrid) & Stephanie McKinney (Jeff); his grandchildren, Zach & Nicholas Freeman and Kirsten & Jake McKinney; his sister Vicki Willet and her children, Tyler & Chelsey; and cousins Dottie Killinger and Gayle Hester. His German family includes his brother-in-law Günther Siegfried and his children, Klaus & Andreas; cousins Eberhard, Birgit and many others who he enjoyed spending time with on his numerous trips to Germany.
A celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m. on November 22 at Christ Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing an act of kindness for someone else, as this is how Greg lived his life.
