Obituary for James Douthat

James Fielding Douthat, 80, of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 12, 2023.  

Mr. Douthat was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 16, 1942.  He moved to Roanoke in 1943.  He finished at Virginia Episcopal School in 1960 and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1964 and Washington & Lee School of Law in 1967.  After graduating law school, Mr. Douthat served in the United States Army.  He practiced law in Roanoke with Woods Rogers, PLC and its predecessors for more than 40 years. 

Mr. Douthat was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church; a devoted student of history; and a lover of antique furniture, gardening and British automobiles. 

Mr. Douthat was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Ann Scott Thompson Douthat; a brother, Anderson Wade Douthat III; and a sister, Nancy Douthat Goss.

He is survived by a son, James Fielding Douthat, Jr. and wife, Gail Lewis Douthat of Richmond; a daughter, Ann Scott Douthat Pavlick and husband, Craig Edward Pavlick of Lexington, Virginia; and two grandchildren, James Fielding Douthat III and Caroline Lewis Douthat.    

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at St. John's Episcopal Church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. John's Episcopal Church or a charity of one's choice.
