James LeRoy Gabbert Jr.

July 25, 1937 – April 30, 2023

James LeRoy Gabbert Jr. of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023.

He was born in Roanoke, Va. on July 25, 1937, to Mildred Fawcett Gabbert and James LeRoy Gabbert Sr. He attended Virginia Military Institute and Emory and Henry College. Following college, he worked for International Shoe Company and American Girl Shoe Company. He then worked in the car business and established Gabbert Buick Pontiac in Suffolk, Va. After selling the auto company, Jim was the sole distributor of George Nicoll golf clubs in the United States.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nancy Moore Gabbert; his children, Sherri Gabbert Pritchard, James LeRoy Gabbert III, Michelle Lynnette Kjeldgaard (Todd); grandchildren, Peyton Pritchard Hoffler (Daniel), Caroline Homes Kjeldgaard, Cameron James Gabbert, and Connor James Gabbert; and stepchildren, Mark Reynolds Pace and Christine Carrington Pace.

He loved golfing, fishing, watching sports on TV, especially golf, tennis and football, and spending summers in Hatteras. Jim also had a special passion for dogs and raised many over his lifetime. His travels included mission trips to India, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
