Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Joe Clark Craighead, of Bedford, Virginia, became our guardian angel on January 28, 2021 at Lynchburg General due to complications from COVID-19.

Joe was raised in Roanoke, Virginia where he attended and was baptised at Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Joe earned his Eagle Scout with Troop 28 and made amazing memories at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico. Joe graduated from Patrick Henry High School, Class of ‘69, and attended Virginia Western Community College.

Joe will be sorely missed by his children, grandchildren, rotten pets, and most of all, his loving and devoted wife, Linda Amos Craighead. Joe brought love and adventure to sweet Linda through motorcycle trips, including their favorite cross county trip to South Dakota, boating on SML, catching the sunrise and wild horses on the beaches of OBX, a bucket list trip to watch Virginia Tech play Notre Dame at Notre Dame for his 70th birthday, and countless weekends watching their granddaughters play competitive softball.

Joe and Linda made their home in Bedford, County where he enjoyed his career as an Electrical Foreman at Southern Air for many years.

Joe fought his battle with Covid with the courage of his favorite Duke, John Wayne. Much like his favorite movie character, Sergeant York, he believed life was a gift from God and “we got to be living it the best we can.” Joe lived for loving and spoiling his family. His smile, contagious laughter, and love will live forever in our hearts.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Madeleine and Paul W. Craighead, Jr., brother, Jim Craighead and brothers in law, John Harkader and Steve Mason. In addition to Linda, Joe is survived by his children, Joseph Craighead and Amy Craighead Butts (David), stepchildren Justin Boyd, Beth Boyd Bell, and Jennifer Boyd. Grandchildren Trevor, Leah and Lynsey Butts, Breanna and Zoe Boyd, Jaccob and Braden Bell and great granddaughter, Ashlynn Butts. Sisters Judy Mason and Joan Harkrader, nephews, nieces, special aunts, uncles, neighbors and lifelong friends, Carle and Gail Fontaine.

The family would like to thank the care team at Lynchburg General and the team at Southern Air for all of their support during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends at Oakey’s Downtown Roanoke on Friday, February 5th from 6-8 p.m. followed by a memorial service on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oakey’s. Joe’s final resting place will be with his parents at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. A service will be held there at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal shelter.

To Linda, Joe and everyone. Well, this sucks! I was so sorry to see this obit. It took me a while to process. I worked with/for Joe. From day one, he did not judge me for my sex, but saw me for my abilities. He let me in. For that, I'm forever grateful. I wish I had told him that, but I think he knew. I did say "thanks" a lot. He smiled when he saw me on the job, so that will always mean something.

Joe loved his family, especially his Ms. Linda...He will be missed for many reasons, great smile and laughter and sharing a story of history or two. Driving his John Deere tractor and helping his neighbors in any way he could. Brave as "The Duke" and fought a great battle against this evil virus, we all wished he had won. You will be missed by so many, but we will never forget what a great man you were on this earth.

Linda, I am so sorry to hear about Joe. I had no idea. I am going to miss his big smile and talking to him at the auctions. I am praying for you. Donald
