John “Johnny” Walter McFarland, 82, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore R. “Ted” and Clara McFarland, and siblings, T.R. “Buddy” McFarland Jr., Goldie “Frances” McFarland, and Josephine McFarland Sledd.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother-in-law, James “Gene” Eugene Sledd; niece, Mary Ann Asberry (Jim); nephew, James “Jimmy” Eugene Sledd Jr. (Cindy); four great-nieces and nephews, Cory Asberry (Brittany), Christian Asberry, Chelsea West (Cody), and James Sledd III; and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.

John was a graduate of Jefferson High School. He served in The United States Army Reserves and retired from General Electric where he worked for most of his life. John was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, hiking, and Smith Mountain Lake.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Jim Asberry officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
