Obituary for John "Tom" "Tom" Schaaff

John Thomas Schaaff  (Tom), 73, went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2024. He was born and raised in Roanoke and lived his adult life in Blue Ridge and Rocky Mount. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Lola Schaaff, and his beloved uncle Henry Griggs and father-in-law Billy Reed.  Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Glenda, to whom he was devoted and joyfully married for 31 years, daughters Chelsea Schaaff and Leslie Bennett Sedgwick, son-in-law Stephen Sedgwick, precious grandson Bennett Sedgwick, sister, Alice Wood and mother-in-law Barbara Jean Reed. He also leaves behind his special friend John Tarta and number of friends and colleagues along with his two adoring four legged children, Lexi and Laci.

Tom retired from a tenured career with Johnson Controls and later went to work and retired from the City of Roanoke, where he was Superintendent of Facilities Management. Tom enjoyed life to the fullest until the very end and filled his days with hobbies and projects. Tom loved the outdoors and was an avid fisher, hunter, golfer and gardener. His favorite pastime was spending time with and doing for his family, and especially his sweetheart.

Tom was the best husband and father and leaves us with a legacy of love and service. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the medical staff in the CCU and Palliative units at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their extraordinary care of Tom during his final days.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Oakey’s South Chapel with Rev. Nelson Harris officiating.
