Obituary for Johnny Murray Jr.

Johnny E. Murray Jr., 91, of Roanoke City, Va., went to his Heavenly Rest on Saturday, November 18, 2023.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma Cayton Murray; his sister, Joan Phillips of Canton, Ohio; three children, Teresa D. Kingery, Cynthia L. Sours, and Johnny E. Murray III; four grandchildren: Brandy Arnold, Amber Heafy, Caylin Murray, Devyn Murray, and two great-grandchildren: Conrad and Gayle Heafy and many nieces and nephews.

He served his country for 32 years, first as an enlisted United States Army soldier in the Korean Conflict, then as an officer in the National Guard and Army Reserves, retiring from service as Lt. Colonel. He served his community as a Virginia State Police Weight Enforcement Officer (ret.). He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University. Johnny will be remembered for generously giving his time and support to others. He was a long-time volunteer for the Veterans Administration in Salem Va. He was a proud supporter of the Red Cross, having regularly donated blood to help save the lives of others. Johnny was a lifelong member of Waverly Place Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. where he taught Sunday school, served on several committees, and eventually became a Deacon. He was a Cub Scout leader and, a friend to his community. He loved to golf, was an avid reader, and enjoyed working on mechanical projects. He was a stand-up guy, beloved by all who knew him. 

Visitation will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2023, with Funeral Service beginning at 2 p.m. A Graveside Service will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
