Obituary for Joy Carr

Joy Hicks Carr of Boone’s Mill, Virginia, peacefully departed this life at her home, surrounded by family, on October 21, 2021. A native of Wilson, NC, Joy earned a Baccalaureus Artium Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963 and embraced a lifelong love of art. Her paintings captured not only the beauty of her surroundings but her vibrant heart. Joy is survived by her three children, Alpheus Branch Carr, III
(Cecilia) of Warrenton, James Bradley Carr (Tammy) of Roanoke, and Nell Watson Carr-Young (Marshall) of Roanoke; sisters Jenifer Webster Aviña of Eden, NC and Diana Lynn Webster of Morehead City, NC; grandchildren Addison Hoff of Portland, OR; Sadie Carr of Columbia, SC; Zachary Carr of Roanoke; Lucas Carr of Roanoke; Lilly Carr of Chicago, IL; Ethan Hoff of Warrenton; and Lucy Carr of Roanoke; special friend and neighbor, Benjamin Coleman; and canine companion, Brisby. Joy is preceded in death by her husband, Alpheus Branch Carr, Jr., parents, Elvin Bradley “Jimmie” Hicks and Ella Bertha “Nellie” Lucas Hicks, beloved Brownie May Johnson, birth
mother Vera Laughinghouse Rouse Webster, as well as cherished fur family: Jiba, Duffy, Daisy, Worthy, Milo, Gabby, Rosie, Charley, and Mattie.
In honor of Joy, the family suggests memorial tributes be made to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig
