Joyce Ann Wood Hayes, born on August 22, 1934, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, after a year-long battle with cancer. She was 88 years old at the time of her home going. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Pearl Wood, sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Carlton Nester, her loving husband of 47 years, Lindy Hayes, her son, Tim Hayes, and her beautiful granddaughter, Lindsey Shook.
Joyce was a longtime member of Melrose Baptist Church, and a member of the Joy Sunday School class. She was a graduate of the 1953 Senior Class at William Fleming High School. She was an accomplished ballroom dancer at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio and was recognized for her abilities with trophies and other honors. She also loved to play the piano. She remained very active in her senior years, including traveling, and spending time with her friends in various activities, including going out to hear music, and dining out. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hayes Kepley, of Virginia Beach, and by her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Hayes Wheeling (Patrick) of Troutville, Va. She has three beautiful granddaughters, Brittany Shook of Troutville, Va. and Taylor and Tiffany Hayes of Powdersville, SC, along with their mother, Tammy Hayes. She is also survived by her nephew, Wayne Nester, and her niece, Lori Nester, both of Montvale, Va. Joyce had many friends, including a best friend, Peggy Johnson of Roanoke.
Her family wants to thank the many friends who took the time to bring her meals, gifts, and rides to appointments during her illness. Special thanks go out to Good Samaritan Hospice, who lovingly and faithfully cared for her during the final months of her life.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, November 21, 2022, at Melrose Baptist Church, and officiated by Pastors Mark Mofield and Greg Hetherington of Melrose Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Oakey's North Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Melrose Baptist Church.
