Obituary for Juanita Jones (Cabiness)

Frances Juanita Cabiness Jones, 93, of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

Her life was not only long but filled with joyful adventures alongside her family and friends. Juanita was a classic “All-American girl.” She married the love of her life, George, when she was still a teenager, and was still happily in love with him when she passed away 76 years later. Together they took motorcycle rides, travelled with friends to antique shows, and enjoyed each other’s company wherever they happened to be. Juanita and George would escape from the city to their cabin at Smith Mountain Lake, where they enjoyed taking their boat out on the water together. One of her many talents was an unusual mastery of numbers. Juanita was a math whiz and could memorize credit card numbers, account numbers, and other long number sequences after seeing them one time. Her charming personality and financial acumen led her to become the top sales associate at Leggett’s Department Store, where she worked for many years. Juanita would have frequent heart-to-heart conversations with her daughter, Vickie, over beers. She drank hers extra fast because she only liked them ice cold! Holidays in the Jones family were always rang in by a feast that Juanita would prepare, and her aptitude in the kitchen was second to none. Whether it was macaroni and cheese, coconut cake, or any other sweet or savory treat, Juanita’s cooking was celebrated by the whole family.

While Juanita loved life and made more wonderful memories than could be counted, she was a woman whose strength was both tested and developed in the face of adversity. She endured the losses of a son, daughter, granddaughter, and grandson, as well as four siblings. She was hit by a car three different times in her youth, which she bounced back from each time. In her later years her eyesight deteriorated, though she still managed to pay bills and accomplish other tasks due to her determined and independent spirit. She cared deeply about those close to her, especially her family. Before her daughter, Francis, passed away, she would cook her dinner every night. George would then drive the hot meal to Francis’s house down the road, and Juanita would have their dinner ready when he returned.

Juanita is survived by her husband of 76 years, George D. Jones; daughter, Vickie Lynn Jones; son, Roy Michael Jones (Donna); brother, Jackie Wayne Cabiness (Pattie); and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clay and Marie Cabiness; daughter, Francis Hackney; son, George D. Jones, Jr.; granddaughter, Erika Michelle Nash; grandson, Timothy Hackney; brothers, Russell Cabiness, Paul Cabiness, Billy Cabiness; and sister, Rachel Overbay.

The Jones family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Trinity King of Medi Home Health & Hospice for her warm and compassionate care of Juanita.
