Obituary for Lawrence "Larry" McNair II

Lawrence North McNair II, 78, of Roanoke County, VA, went to his Heavenly home with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.



Larry was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 28, 1944. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John McNair. Larry was the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence North McNair. His family moved to Muskegon, Michigan when he was young. He had a brilliant mind. He liked to sail and had a sailboat as a teenager. Larry was a train enthusiast; he loved train rides and model trains. He also loved baseball.



Being the scholar that he was, Larry was a graduate of Muskegon High School; Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana; and Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. Following his graduation, Larry taught at private schools in Kansas before moving to Blacksburg, VA to attend Virginia Tech. He owned a professional sign business in Christiansburg, VA for several years. He taught Economics at Southern Virginia University. He retired from Verizon in Roanoke, VA after 12 years. Larry was deeply religious and was a member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Catholic Church in Roanoke, VA.



Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Taylor McNair; his son, Greg McNair of Michiana, MI; his daughter, Amy Kinsley (Dave) of Newport, VA; stepdaughters, Candace Calfee of Roanoke, VA and Amber Wilson (Roy) of Wirtz, VA; grandchildren, Adrianna Wilson and Alex Wilson of Wirtz, VA; brother, Jim McNair of Sharpsburg, GA; sister, Susan Townsend (Dale) of LaGrange, GA; brothers-in-law, Norman Taylor of Siler City, NC and Duane Taylor (Debbie) of Blacksburg, VA; and several nephews, nieces and other family.



The Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta, VA with a reception to follow.
