Obituary for Louis Faust Jr.
Louis Anthony Faust, Jr. - Mr. Faust, 95, of Roanoke, died in the early morning hours of February 10, 2021 at Springtree Health and Rehabilitation Hospital. Just before Christmas, Louis, as he was known to his many friends and extended family members, fell and broke his hip. He was recovering from the surgery and was in the midst of rehabilitation when he developed respiratory infections. Louis was in and out of Roanoke Carilion Memorial Hospital and another rehabilitation center with a variety of illnesses that are common to those who are both elderly and have limited mobility. His cause of death was inhalation pneumonia.
Louis was born in Lockport, NY, the county seat of Niagara County, in 1925. His parents divorced early in his life, and he was raised by his mother, Pearl, and her sisters, all of whom referred to him as "Junie," a diminutive of Junior. No one else was ever heard to use that name. At 17, Louis was allowed to graduate early from Lockport Senior High School with the consent of his mother because of his high academic marks. After completing basic training at Great Lakes Training Center, he met his wife, Jacqueline Ruth Ann Pierson, originally of St Louis, and the couple were married in February 1943. The couple would go on to have 3 children: Doug (1949), Roger (1950), and Janine (1958).
Louis was posted to the USS Montauk LSV-6 (Landing Ship Vehicle), which was primarily stationed off the coast of Okinawa in support of the invasion there. Louis would serve as a radioman and radar operator. When he was not sitting at a teletype machine, he could be found in the Mess, perfecting his recipes for fudge and hot fudge sauce. His hot fudge sauce recipe remains a family secret passed on to just 1 family member.
Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, Louis moved with his young family to Arlington, VA, where he would live for most of the remainder of his life. He began working in radio-television repair in Crystal City, Virginia, and soon moved to the Department of the Army Telecommunications division at the Pentagon. While there, among many other projects, he oversaw the installation of the first Red Line connecting Russia and the White House.
Louis’ love of cooking continued after leaving the Navy. Apart from hosting many family picnics and dinners with extended family, he was also the lead cook for the Men’s Club at the Little Falls Presbyterian Church in Arlington where he would team with his eldest son to prepare Easter Breakfast for more than a hundred families. He hiked and camped with both sons’ Boy Scout troops. Louis faithfully participated in the Merry Makers in Northern Virginia, a community musical group that performed for the public, as well as in local nursing homes.
Jacqueline Faust predeceased her husband in 2016. Louis is survived by his sister, Nancy Schell, 88, who lives in northern Virginia, his son Doug, age 72 (Salem, MA), son Roger, age 70, (Vero Beach, FL) and daughter, Janine Faust Willis, age 62 (Roanoke, VA). He had 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren at the time of his death.
