Obituary for Melvin Conner

Melvin Leroy Conner, 83 of Salem, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022.  He was preceded in death by his father, Roy A. Conner, a brother Danny A. Conner, and a sister, Darlene Yates.

Melvin graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1957, and subsequently joined the Army a few years later.  He served from 1963 to 1965 in the Army, spending most of his time stationed in Germany.  Upon his return, Melvin worked for the VA Dept. of Highways in the Survey department for 10 years, before going to work for the Postal Service.  He worked as a Clerk in the Salem Post Office for 47 years before retiring.  Melvin was a member of Mason’s Cove Church of the Brethren, a Charter Member of Mason’s Cove Volunteer Fire Dept, a member of Roanoke Moose Lodge # 284.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marsha Bohn Conner, two sons, Michael L. Conner (Ruth) and Brian P. Conner (Tracey); four grandchildren, Michelle Whitehead (David), James M. Conner, Halsey Conner (Eric Richards) and Hayden Conner; four great grandchildren, Madelyn (Maddie) Hensley, Jackson Whitehead, Sawyer Whitehead and Broli Richards.  Melvin is also survived by his mother, Bertie R. Conner, two brothers, Larry Conner (Annette) and Ricky Conner (Freda), two sisters, Shelva Spence and Gloria Mounts (Danny), and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 4,2023, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Emma Jean Woodard officiating.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at Oakey’s North Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made Mason’s Cove Church of the Brethren.
