Obituary for Nelson "Tom" Huffman II

Nelson Thomas Huffman II “Tom”, age 83, of Roanoke passed away on June 17, 2022.

Tom was born on September 7, 1938 to Nelson Thomas Huffman I and Bertha Thomas Huffman. He was raised in Bridgewater, VA, graduated from Bridgewater High School, and attended Bridgewater College. He served in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967 and played in the 90th Army Band.

Tom was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Eleanor Christine Huffman Myers, his wife of 32 years Evelyn M. Huffman, and a multitude of beloved pets. Numerous Uncles, Aunts, and cousins, plus some good friends will also greet him in Heaven, so we suspect there is a somewhat rowdy reunion going on.

Tom had a long career in television production and wrapped up his career as a Producer/Director at Virginia Tech’s Video/Broadcast Services. Tom enjoyed jogging, relaxing at the beach or in the mountains, collecting knives and watches, growing tomatoes and flowers, and spending time with his grandchildren. He sang in the Rockingham Male Chorus, in his church choir, and in the car. As family and friends can attest, he was a joyful prankster, which was an inherited trait. He was a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren and was a member of Central Church of the Brethren at the time of his passing.

He is survived by his children, Michael Huffman, Lorrie Huffman Juftes, and Todd Huffman, his Step-children, Vanessa Parker, Lori Morris, and Brian Kaczmarski, 9 grandchildren, and his dog, Bo.

The family would like to thank the residents and staff of Friendship Assisted Living, as well as his girlfriend Bonnie Balmer, for bringing him joy and companionship in the last few years of his life.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00am at Central Church of the Brethren in Roanoke. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel in downtown Roanoke from 3 until 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be made to Central Church of the Brethren, Roanoke, VA
