Ora Slone Pittman Maughan, 103, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.  She was born on January 24, 1919 in Calloway, Virginia to Hattie and Henry Slone.  Ora graduated from Calloway High School where she was active in basketball, swimming, and the 4H Club.  She also enjoyed playing guitar and piano.  Ora met and married Joe N. Pittman and moved to Roanoke.  They had one daughter, Sylvia Pittman.

Ora worked at the Heironimus Department Store as a Fashion Buyer for over 30 years.  She traveled for work to Rome, Belgium, Hawaii, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and many trips to New York City.  After Heironimus closed, Ora went on to manage the Moose Lodge Pool for 17 years.  She was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge.  Ora liked to keep busy and never really did retire, she worked at many local restaurants and well into her 80s.  She was known as a very independent and active woman.

Ora was preceded in death by her daughter, Sylvia Pittman Britton, her sisters, Ethel Renick, Grace Prillaman, Ida Turner, Marie Waggoner; her brother, Warren Slone; and her constant companion, Jack Ellinwood.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Rosalie Littlejohn (Mike), Angelia Gutierrez, and Ted Britton (Connie); several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; special nieces and nephew, Evie, Marion and Mark Slone, Jeanine Burke and Arlene.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2023 at Oakey’s South Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
