Rachel Grant McGimsey, 93, of Roanoke, VA passed away on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023.

Rachel was born on March 4, 1930 in Mocksville, NC to the late Clarence South and Lois Tiller Grant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dick G. McGimsey, and her sister, Patricia Grant Williard.

She graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC in 1952 and taught high school Drama and English in North Wilkesboro, NC, where she met Dick.  They married on August, 14, 1958 at the Grant family farm in Mocksville, NC.  Later in 1958 they moved to Richmond, VA and on to Roanoke in 1963.  Rachel taught Drama and English at Patrick Henry High School. 

She loved golf, tennis, entertaining and traveling.  She also volunteered at South Roanoke United Methodist Church and with Meals-on-Wheels. 

Rachel is survived by her son, Rich G. McGimsey, Jr, and wife, Ellen, granddaughters, Caroline & Meredith McGimsey, brother-in-law, John Williard, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service celebrating Rachel’s life will be held at South Roanoke United Methodist Church in Roanoke, VA on Saturday, June 24th at 2pm with Rev. Craig Newman officiating.  A reception at the church will follow the service.
