Obituary for Rebecca "Becky" Houchins (Brammer)

Rebecca “Becky” Ellen Brammer Houchins, 80, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022. She was born in Woolwine, Virginia in Patrick County on November 12, 1941 to the late Archie and Ethel Dillon Brammer. Rebecca was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, William “Bill” Houchins and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Barker.

Rebecca is survived by her son, John William Houchins; sister, Patsy Barker; nieces and nephew, Sherri Broadwell, Charles Andrew “Andy” Barker and Wendy Bost and other loving family and friends.

She graduated from Woolwine High School in 1960, Ferrum Junior College in 1962, Radford College in 1964 and later completed a Masters Degree program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). Rebecca taught Biology and later served as a Guidance Counselor at Northside High School in Roanoke County, Virginia for over 30 years. She enjoyed caring for others and helping students find their vocation or career path. Rebecca put others first and was a loving mother and wife. She chose Cave Spring United Methodist Church as her faith community later in life and embraced volunteer work.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm at Cave Spring United Methodist Church with Pastor Lauren Lobenhofer officiating.
