Obituary for Richard Harman Sr.

Richard “Rick” Harman Sr. of Roanoke, Va., was born on July 30, 1929, in Huntington, W.Va., to Earl and Fannie, and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the age of 94.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Peggy, of 65 years. He was also preceded in death by his son, Mark; his daughter-in-law, Cathy; his sister, Betty; and his brother-in-law, Ed Dickerson.

Rick is survived by his children, Karen Sydenstricker, Rick Harman Jr., Dana Graninger, and Tommy Harman; sons-in-law, John Sydenstricker and Harry Graninger; daughter-in-law, Beth Harman; 18 grandchildren, Katie, Betsy, Christine, Rob, Brett, Elizabeth, Maggie, Caroline, Laura, Meg, Sarah, Charlton, Brandon, Cara, Jake, Michael, Payton, and Parker; 23 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Dickerson; and many special friends including Joe Golding and Melody Baker.

Rick was a proud 1952 graduate of Virginia Tech where he served in the Corps of Cadets, played trombone in the Highty-Tighties, and met his beloved wife. After graduation Rick, ever the patriot, joined the United States Army and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves. Later, Rick founded and ran Harman Ceiling and Partition Company (1971-2010) until retirement at age 80.

Rick enjoyed retirement by maintaining his horse farm for his beloved animals, attending as many Hokie sporting events as possible, and offering continued support to the Roanoke Hokie Club and the VT Corps of Cadets.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Good Samaritan Hospice, and specifically Sandy Booth, for their dedication to Rick and family over the last three years.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, October 22, 2023, between 12:30 and 2 p.m. at Oakey’s South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke. A small chapel service will follow at 2 p.m. officiated by Chaplain Denise Noble. The family will have a private graveside service at Evergreen Burial Park at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 2023.
