Obituary for Roger Creasy

Roger Lee Creasy, of Roanoke, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 1, 2023 following a recent illness.

One of four children, and the only son, he was born September 27, 1947 to the late Walter Otey and Zenna Ash Creasy. Also preceding him in death is sister, Peggy Elizabeth Creasy, niece, Sherry Lynn Wilson, sister-in-law, Magdalene Hodges, brothers-in-law, Raymond Wright, Carl Wright and Bill Young.

Roger worked in the furniture and upholstery business for nearly sixty years. In 1968 while working at Johnson Carper furniture, he met the woman who would become his best friend, his wife, and the person who would stand by his side through all of life’s trials and tribulations, Judy Wright Creasy. In 1978 they opened Creasy’s Upholstery and established a long lasting and fruitful business. Through their designers and interior decorators, Creasy’s Upholstery was well known in the Roanoke Valley and Smith Mountain Lake areas. Roger’s reputation for building custom furniture spanned to other states across the U.S., allowing him to secure contracts with large commercial companies. He also designed and built furniture for movie sets and also for railway passenger rail cars. His skill and art were unmatched. After retirement he was occasionally called upon to do small jobs. He and Judy turned their carport into a makeshift upholstery shop allowing him to continue doing the work he loved.

Roger was a lover of all sports and played fast pitch softball as a catcher in his younger years. He loved to hunt, play golf, and even bowled on a league, but his passion was fishing. He took many fishing trips with his buddies to Kerr Lake in Henderson, NC, catching several huge catfish in excess of forty pounds. He also spent time fishing at Smith Mountain Lake and received a couple of Trophy Fish Awards from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for the fish he caught. He always had the TV on ESPN Sports Center, so much so, he had to have his own TV room. At times he would watch a game with another game as a “picture in a picture” so he could see two games or different sports at the same time.

The most important thing in Roger’s life was his family.  Above all else, the people who meant the most to him were his girls, an endearing term he used when referring to his wife and his daughters. He was very involved in supporting and caring for his parents during their lives, anything they needed, he made sure they had it. Roger was the rock in the family and always the go-to person when someone needed help. He enjoyed spending time with his grandson and enjoyed it when he would stop by to watch a game and then debate why the other team should have won. He would take one day a week to spend with his three sister’s and they would have “movie day” to watch a specific movie or show series, their favorite being Game of Thrones. He mentored his nephew in the upholstery business and taught him the art of covering furniture and was proud when he was able to step out and open up a business of his own.

Roger lived a full life and made a lasting and remarkable impression on many. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of almost 52 years, Judy Wright Creasy; daughters and sons-in-law, Missy Early (Bobby) and Jodi Baker (Chris); grandson, Trey Mills; sisters, Bonnie Conner (Buster) and Ronda Parr (Tony); sisters-in-law, Sylvia Young, Jean Love (Jimmy), Ruby Harris (Tim), Betty Ayers (Samuel), and Darlene Blankenship (Harry); brothers-in-law, Tommy Wright (Thelma), and David Wright (Brenda);; many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.

According to Roger’s wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Oakey’s North Chapel. The family will receive friends at 1:00 P.M. and the service will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Don Eshelman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to your church or favorite charity in Roger’s name.
