Obituary for Roger Talmadge

Colonel Roger Stewart Talmadge (USA Ret.)

The Talmadge family announces the passing of Colonel Roger Stewart Talmadge, U.S. Army Retired, in Roanoke, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.  Roger (“Red Bull 6” or “Big Rog” to his friends) was born October 16, 1937, in Mont Claire, New Jersey. In high school, “COL T”  joined the U.S. Navy, initiating a long and prestigious career that led to a direct commission in the U.S. Army. As a young Major, “Rog” married Charlotte Ellyn Bolz of Cleveland, Ohio. They lived and traveled the world, built a squad of seven children, and celebrated over 54 years of marriage! As a thread throughout their lives, the Lord Jesus has been a constant companion, blessing them and others with whom they have met through his large extended family that has grown through the years. Roger is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and his children, Michael, Patricia, Debbie, Andrew, Shawn, David, and Daniel, and their lovely spouses. But wait,... there’s more… Big Rog’s legacy extends to over 20 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren! Now, that is a herd to be reckoned with (and a digital planner)!  After retiring from the U.S. Army as a Colonel, he spent time serving within the Roanoke community, building a successful multi-million dollar Disabled American Veterans Thrift Store operation serving the Roanoke Valley, coordinating global missionary efforts for First Baptist Church in Roanoke, and, most recently, as the founding president of the Military Family Support Center which serves our Nation’s families and warriors.  COL T was an avid tennis player, lash maker, trim painter, and enthusiastic hugger (if you know Big Rog, ya’ know!). Roger made every opportunity to connect personally and share his love for Jesus.

The family will welcome visitors on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 5 to 7 pm at Oakey’s Funeral Home, 318 Church Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia 24016.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at noon at First Baptist Church Faith Chapel, 321 Marshall Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia 24016. Recommend parking off Marshall Street—a reception to follow.

Internment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery in the coming months.
