Obituary for Shirley Williamson "Shirl" Light

Shirley “Shirl” Williamson Light, age 57 passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Louise Williamson; brother, Joey Williamson and brother-in-law, Wayne Atkins.

She is survived by her husband, Chuck Light; children, Kayla Light and Cody Light; sister, Pat Wray and David Raby, Ruby Pond, Sandy and Miguel Paiz; sisters-in-law, Dana Williamson and June and Mike Turner and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was born in Roanoke on July 19, 1966, graduated from Staunton River High School and married Chuck on April 12, 1986. She loved walking in the woods, knitting, collecting rocks from vacation sites, gardening and spending time with family. She was employed with Heironimus for 11 years, was a member of the Roanoke Citizen Police Academy, Roanoke City Sheriff Academy, completed training in Project Life Saver which was to help find missing people. Because of her knowledge of special need children, she was hired by Roanoke City Schools to be Parent Resource Center Coordinator and was later hired by Commonwealth Autism. She helped start “Bridge the Gap, a program to help parents with special need children or to help find legal and everyday help.

A memorial service to honor Shirley will be at @2:00 on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Online Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.oakeys.com.
