Thomas Mitchell Hudson

Thomas Mitchell Hudson, born November 17, 1929, to Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Harrell Hudson of Roanoke, Virginia died on October 31, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.  Tom was predeceased by his wife, Elaine Holliday Hudson; his parents, Clayton and Annie Mitchell Hudson; and his brother, Clay, Jr. 

          He is survived by his five children, Cynthia and Jan Landeweer, Sara and Don Johnston, Susan Hudson, Amy and David Dreher, and Mitch and Lara Hudson.

          He left a legacy of service and caring to his grandchildren and great grandchildren; grandchildren, John and Heather Gallagher, Emily Gallagher, Annie Johnston, Haley and Nick Chastang, Chip and Karen Johnston, Katie and Mike Hill, Ginny Taylor, Ellen and Arturo Dreher-Gonzalez, Thom and Mackenzie Dreher, and Hannah Hudson; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Gallagher, Carter and Ella Chastang, and predeceased by Hudson T. Whisenhunt-Gallagher.

          Tom was a Class of 1948 Jefferson High School graduate, a Class of 1952 Virginia Tech graduate in Business and member of the Corps of Cadets, and a lifelong supporter of the University and the Corps.  He served in the United States Air Force and settled back in Roanoke, Virginia where he and Elaine raised their family.

          Tom and Elaine joined Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and remained active members until their passing.  They made innumerable friends there and served in numerous positions over 60 years.

          Tom also joined the Raleigh Court Lions Club/Cave Spring Lions Club and was their longest serving member and the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award.  Tom’s children helped to sell Lions Club brooms, collect eyeglasses, and his son participated in the annual Lions Club sponsored Bland Memorial music competition.  Every activity was a family affair. 

At the request of Tom’s uncle Ernest Mitchell and his cousin Jack Abel, Tom joined Mitchell’s Clothing Company on Church Avenue in downtown Roanoke where he worked until the store closed its doors in 1997.

The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice and Tom’s caregivers who gave selflessly to his well being and comfort.  The memorial services will be held Saturday, November 11, at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church beginning at 10:00 am with inurnment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Park officiated by Joanna Paysour.  Friends are welcome to join the family at Tom’s home from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
