Obituary for Vera Wissler (Wilburn)

Vera Dona Wilburn Wissler, 99, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Springtree Health and Rehab Center.

She was born on November 16, 1924, in Pearisburg, Va., to the late Herbert Easley Wilburn and Vera Blanche Eaton Wilburn. Dona was also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Donald Oscar Wissler; two sisters, Ernestine Wilburn Minnick and Mary Wilburn Lafon; and three brothers, Eugene Wilburn, Randolph Wilburn and Ted Wilburn.

After high school, Dona moved to Roanoke where she worked as a waitress at the Roanoker Restaurant. Upon moving to Richmond, she held several clerical and sales positions until she met and married Don Wissler. They lived briefly at Buckroe Beach, Virginia and San Bernardino, California before settling in Roanoke in 1952 to raise their family.

Dona was a homemaker with many creative interests, including sewing, needlework, cooking, baking, preserving fruits and vegetables, along with spoiling her six grandchildren.

She was an active member of Belmont Presbyterian Church serving as Sunday School teacher, vacation bible school worker, and elder.

Together Dona and Donald enjoyed traveling and vacationing at the beach. 

She is survived by her son, Jim Wissler of Roanoke; daughter, Bonnie Wissler Price and husband, David Price, of Fork Mountain; six grandchildren, Michael Wissler (Melinda) of Lyndhurst, Melissa Price Powers (Doug) of Nashville, Byron Price of Simi Valley, California, Andrew Price (Rachel) of Bellflower, California, Tyler Price (Carolyn) of Blacksburg, Matthew Price (Emma Coltoff) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren, Erin Wissler, Anna Wissler, Sterling Wissler and Luke Powers; as well as a sister, Georgia (Jo) Munsey of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. The Funeral Service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in the Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Pastor Todd Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Sherwood Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank the numerous caregivers that allowed Vera Wissler to remain in her home until her recent illness.
