Obituary for Wade "Tommy" Atkins Jr.

W. Thomas “Tommy” Atkins, Jr., 90, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 17, 2023.  He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 11, 1932 to Wade Atkins, Sr. and Lois Jennings Atkins.  Tom was a lifelong resident of the Roanoke Valley.  He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 50 years, Sue Atkins.

Tom was a 1950 graduate of William Fleming High School and a 1954 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.  Spending time with family and friends was important to Tom, he often helped his father at the family business, Deluxe Laundry & Cleaners.  Tom also worked and retired from Piedmont Airlines.  He was a member of Airlee Court Baptist Church and the Williamson Road Lions Club.  He enjoyed reading and could best be described as a well-read man.  Tom loved watching movies of all types.  He was very kind hearted and caring.  When his beloved wife’s health declined, Tom took loving care of her for years until her passing, showing his devotion and love for her.  

Tommy is survived by his sister, Betty Lois Atkins of Roanoke; his nephew, Frank A. Bartin (Kelley) of Roanoke; his niece, Cynthia Bartin Hummer (Keith) of Hot Springs, VA; and his brother-in-law, Carl Watson (Betty) of Roanoke.
