Walter Henry of Poages Mill in Roanoke County, Va. passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, entering eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Dad was born on June 30, 1926, in Roanoke, Va. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Virginia B. Henry; his parents, R.A. Henry and Ella C. Henry; his beautiful great-granddaughter, Quinn Ellis Cornett; his brother and sister-in-law, Albert (Lillian) Henry; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred (Steve) Dimond, Margaret (Silas) Hartman, Jane (Jack) Harrison, Ruth (Tom) Rothrock; and dear friends, Herb and Edna Cloeter of Roanoke.
He leaves his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael (Becky) Henry of Chesterfield, Va., and Garland (JoAnn) Henry of Cleveland, Tenn.; precious grandchildren, Megan (Dr. Jaime Noonan) and their children, Jamison, Carson and Sullivan, of Fort Mill, S.C.; Adam (Lindsay) Henry and their children, Hadley and Beckett, of Orlando, Fla.; and Erin (Joseph) Cornett and their sons, Henry and Nash, of Fort Mill, S.C.; and many nephews and nieces.
A special thanks to his family, neighbors and friends, Steve Henry, Harold Stump, Mike Roach and Donnie Cloeter for their care, and friendship that allowed Dad to live at home until February of 2022. Also, thanks to Pastor Todd Reed for his regular visits and pastoral care and giving a listening ear to all of Dad’s stories.
Dad was a lifelong farmer that loved the farm and farm life. “Making Hay,” growing sweet corn, tomatoes, and cantaloupes, managing and selling eggs from commercial flocks of laying hens and selling eggs retail and wholesale, plowing gardens, pushing snow, taking produce to the Roanoke City Market and all the typical daily chores that take place on the farm.
He loved and kept a running journal of daily temperatures, rain/snowfall, weather events and farm activities. He was an active member and board member of the Roanoke County Farm Bureau. As with most farmers of his generation he could repair a multitude of things with baler twine, wire, and pliers.
Per Dad’s request and the help of David and Josh Poage, his casket will be transferred to a farm wagon at the Old Poage Store site and pulled by tractor to the cemetery.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the Henry Family Cemetery at the corner of Corntassel Lane and Moncap Trail. Pastor Todd Reed will officiate
