William
Overfelt,
Jr.
William H. Overfelt, Jr., 89, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2023. With angels singing, he entered the gates to be with Jesus. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on January 10, 1934 to the late William and Wilhelmina “Willie” Overfelt, Sr.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Paul and sisters, Francis, Jean and Lessie.
William was a U. S. Army veteran and had worked as a concrete finisher since he was 10 years old. In 1959, he started his own business known as William Overfelt and Son, Inc. and continued as owner and operator for 50+ years.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, loving father to his children was proud and had a special bond with each of his grandchildren. He loved “his Shirley” as it was evident in every picture where they were seen holding hands. Theirs was a great love story: it would have been 66 years of marriage on March 16, 2023. Never a moment went by where he wasn’t making sure to tell his children to “take care of momma” as she whispered to him “I love you; you are such a good man” each and every minute she visited with him. He never missed any football games, piano concerts or basketball games. Everything his children and grandchildren did, he was in attendance yelling encouragement from the stands or wearing proud t-shirts in support.
He was a kind and generous man who always put his family first. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He worked extremely hard and in so family joked truthfully that he had worked his hind end off since he rarely filled out any clothing in the posterior section.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Shirley; his children, Mark Overfelt and wife, Brenda, Julie Beatty and husband, Brice, Caroline Wray and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Conner Overfelt, Abigail Beatty and Kinsey Overfelt.
William’s biggest reward was to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant”. We hear you, Dad, with the angels singing “The Old Rugged Cross” right now. We know you are with God cutting up and joking while eating a banana split, free from any pain, spending time praising God, stamping the golden stairways perfectly with golden concrete not cement and visiting your family and many friends who have passed before you.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Oakey’s South Chapel. The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the Oakey’s South Chapel with Minister Carlton Hodges and Lay Minister Mike Wray officiating. Burial will follow in the Franklin Memorial Gardens.
Special thanks to the caring professionals at Friendship South and Harmony Assisted Living. The “love birds” and children appreciate your care and kindness at this time and in the past given to them. This transition, while most painful, is eased by the genuine heartfelt emotion displayed by both facilities.
