Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Hart Nuckolls Lamons, 79, of Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake, passed away peacefully at the Richfield Joseph C. Thomas Center on May 15, 2020 shortly after being diagnosed with ovarian canver.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Walter Lamons, and parents William Joseph Nuckolls, Jr. and Marion S. Hart, was the granddaughter of Hon. John M. Hart, judge of the Hustings (now Circuit) Court of Roanoke City and then Commissioner of the Revenue for Roanoke City, and is survived by several cousins.

Betty was a graduate of Blacksburg High School and Radford College, and was employed for many years as a recreational therapist at the Salem VA Medical Center. Together with Tom, Betty maintained an active lifestyle in both the Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake areas. They were members of both the VISA Yacht Club and the Scubanauts Dive Club, and enjoyed many diving trips around the world. Since 1971, they were members of Smith Mountain Lake Flotilla 81 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Betty was a certified boating safety instructor for both the Auxiliary and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. She was also a qualified boat crew member for lake safety patrols and, together with Tom, an important part of the property and grounds maintenance team for the Auxiliary’s Smith Mountain Lake base for many years. She and Tom were members of Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta during their lake years and, more recently after Tom’s passing in 2013, she had attended Calvary Baptist in Roanoke with her close USCG Auxiliary friend Paul M. Howell. She was also a member and volunteer excursion train host together with Paul for the Roanoke Chapter, National Railway Historical Society.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, on Monday, May 18 at 2:00 pm with Dr. Steven W. Pollard officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Betty’s memory to the organization of your choice.
